Hi guys. ♥

school:
It rained all week, so we were all stuck inside all day every day. We also had two days of flickering power and unreliable a/c. It was a pretty amusing adventure, all told.

One thing that's always hard for me in the beginning of the year is that I don't yet have relationships with my students. Once we have a relationship, there's that faith and knowledge of who they are and it allows me better ways to handle new and unexpected challenges (ie, weather, power issues, emergencies, and etc...).

The amazing thing this week was that I really remembered that. Some times the end of the previous year looms so large in my mind that it's hard to remember that at the beginning of last year my students were also so young, and didn't know me, and etc...

But this time (for some reason) I didn't let my memory and love of last year's class color the first week of the school year. I just kept looking at the kids, learning about them, trying different things and trusting that at some point in the next few weeks I'm going to fall in love with them and be able to handle anything that gets thrown at us.

They cancelled school for Friday because all of the rain had caused some flooding and road closures, and I was surprised to wake up on Friday and realize that I was going to miss the kids.

That felt good. ♥

fannish:

I've hit 48k on my John/Sherlock story, but haven't been able to write very much for the past week or so. The most recent part needs some heavy editing, but it was a hard, necessary scene, so I'm glad to have a draft of it.

I've just seen some promo pictures from s4 of Merlin. Oh my. When does it start again?

Also, all of the glorious Benedict picture spam from the past week (the TTSS Venice press conference and premiere and the GQ awards) has been absolutely a lovely thing to look at when I get home from work. Dear Ben, would you please always wear gloriously well tailored suits and your lovely red hair every September when I'm starting school? I'd be much obliged. thank you.

random:

I've been watching some HGTV recently whilst doing lots of school things (tracing, cutting out, and etc...) and I get such a kick out of the makeover shows, the design shows, the handyman shows, the searching for homes shows, but I do have one favor to ask? Please, HGTV, House Hunters is not that good a show. There is no reason to play 4-6 episodes of it in a row. Were it just one I'd probably be fine with it, but I'll be honest... it just makes me switch the channel.

It's been a good while since I updated, and really, since I've been able to read my flist reliably. Alas. :( I've had some guests: [personal profile] drusillas_rain, [personal profile] girl_in_prague, [personal profile] inspiredlife, travelled up north for a visit with a good friend and then a wedding, started summer school.

So, some bullet points, because I really like making pretty stars...

★ I saw Third Star last week, an independent film with Benedict Cumberbatch. It was amazing. I keep thinking about it, different scenes, different moments. I really hope it'll be available on region one DVD one day.

★ Summer school has been pretty fun, getting a chance to see former students and work with older students for a little while. This week I have 4th graders. Nine year olds have really amazing brains. I'd forgotten. :)

★ John Watson. gnnuuhhh. That is all.

★ I have fic to post tomorrow! I took a short break from my long-fic to write a one shot because it feels like it's been a while since I finished something. So, yay, fic! John/Sherlock, of course. And my first time with Sherlock's PoV.

So... how've you been? ♥
